Dental X-Rays (Radiographs) are preventative and necessary diagnostic tools that detect hidden dental disease and abnormalities, not visible with a visual dental exam alone. Dentists and Dental Hygienists use this information to safely and accurately detect and identify dental disease and problem areas to make a complete and accurate treatment plan.
During our daily lives, we are all exposed to natural radiation in the environment. The amount of radiation exposure from a full mouth series of dental x-rays is approximate to the amount a person receives in one day from natural sources.
Your individual needs for dental diagnosis determines the need for dental x-rays and the number and variety of views necessary to achieve the proper diagnosis. Based on the review of your medical and dental history, dental exam, signs and symptoms, age and risk for disease, your dentist and hygienist will recommend necessary x-rays at the time of your appointment.
Even though no x-ray is considered routine, many people need x-rays on a regular basis to monitor their dental condition. Some may need x-rays every 6 months, while most need x-rays annually and these are referred to as Bite-wing x-rays (x-rays of the top and bottom teeth biting together), taken at the “check-up” exam and cleaning visits. On a patient’s first visit to the office a full mouth series of dental x-rays is recommended and is usually good for three to five years. The full mouth series will reveal both the crown and root of the tooth and the surrounding bone and bony tissues to check for decay and any abnormalities such as tumors, cysts, abscesses or infections in the bone.
