estorations: Dentures & Partial Dentures

Complete dentures are used to replace missing teeth for people with no remaining teeth. Dentures are also used for people who have lost several teeth and this appliance is called a partial denture or an overdenture.

Tooth decay, gum disease or traumatic injury may result in the loss of teeth. It is extremely important to replace missing teeth. Without replacement, the remaining teeth may shift, and there may be an inability to bite and chew food properly, which can then result in poor nutrition. In addition, the sagging facial appearance may be undesirable and causes one to appear much older than they are.

Dentures today are designed to be comfortable and functional. They are very similar in appearance to natural teeth, can improve a smile or facial appearance and improve your overall health with restored nutritional balance.

Due to normal wear and changes in the underlying tissues, dentures may need to be repaired, readjusted or remade over the years.

What does getting a denture involve?

The kind of denture indicated depends on number of missing teeth and condition of the soft and hard tissues of the arch. Precise impressions (molds) and measurements are taken to ensure a comfortable custom fit denture. To ensure proper shape, color and fit there may be several “try in” appointments. At the final appointment, precise adjustments may be made to ensure a proper bite and fit.

The mouth will need time to adjust to the new dentures. One may notice increased saliva flow which is perfectly normal. Soreness and possible speech and chewing difficulty may also be present; however, this will subside as the tissues and muscles adjust to the new dentures.

Care instructions are given for the new dentures and for proper oral hygiene. Proper cleaning and regular dental visits to examine the remaining teeth and all soft and hard tissues is vitally important to the life of the dentures and to the health of the mouth.
