If decay causes an infection in the nerve chamber of a tooth or the tooth is damaged by trauma, root canal treatment is often the only way to save your tooth. The pulp or nerve chamber of the tooth is a specialized area that contains a system of blood vessels, lymph vessels and nerves, which enter the bone through the root canals. This system provides nourishment for the cells within the tooth. Deep decay or injury to the tooth can cause damage and infection of the tooth pulp. In a root canal or endodontic treatment, the dentist removes the damaged or infected pulp and replaces it with a special filler which helps maintain the remaining tooth structure. Now, the tooth has no live nerve without blood or nutrient supply, so the outer layer of enamel becomes brittle. After a root canal treatment is completed, the treatment plan recommendation is to cover the brittle tooth with a crown to provide strength and protection from tooth breakage and loss.
